What’s happening
Readers of all ages are invited to unearth a good book this summer and Dig Into Reading at The Public Library for Union County!
This year’s theme is about all things underground–dirt, plants, fossils, animals that burrow, buried treasure and more! Special programs focusing on the theme are planned throughout the summer.
Registration begins Monday, June 3 at the library or you can Register Online!
The Union County Library System is hosting a kick-off celebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 5 at the Mifflinburg Community Park featuring award-winning children’s performer Steven Courtney. Children have the opportunity to “dig” into our exploration stations and enjoy hot dogs, chips, “dirt” and “sand” desserts and beverages. The kick-off celebration is free and open to children of all ages!
Discover
The Public Library for Union County is excited to announce the launch of Discover, a new early literacy program for children up to age five and their parents.
The Discover program includes theme-based sessions that feature activities to enhance alphabet knowledge, phonetic awareness, and number, color, and shape recognition. Additional benefits of participation include following directions, interacting with other children, being patient and respectful, listening comprehension, vocabulary development, visual processing, and grammar.
Discover also introduces parents to simple activities that can help their child with reading and preparing for school, while exploring books together. Parents are encouraged to continue the learning process with take-home materials including coloring pages, songs, and activities they can do with their child.
Visit the Calendar of Events page for Discover dates and times by clicking HERE. For more information or to register call the library at 570-523-1172. This program is one of the ways in which the Union County Library System supports the PA Forward Initiative by providing basic literacy opportunities for learning.

Fall Session of A…B…C… Play With Me
The Public Library for Union County will be hosting A…B…C… Play With Me, a five-week parent/child workshop for children ages 14-40 months and their parents.
During each session, the library provides a setting in which the child and parent can work and play together, while also introducing the parent to some of the many local resources available to help them in the rewarding, but challenging, task of parenting a toddler.
Each session will focus on a different theme including Literacy, Nutrition, Speech and Language, Music and Movement, and Child Development.
Sessions will be held at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday mornings. A…B…C… Play With Me beings September 20 and runs consecutively for five weeks through October 19.
For more information or to register call 570-523-1172. This program is one of the ways in which The Public Library for Union County supports the PA Forward Initiative by providing Basic, Civic, Social and Health Literacy opportunities for learning.
