One Book, Every Freshman: Out of the Dust
a project of the Lewisburg Area High School and
The Public Library for Union County

Over the summer 0f 2013, every incoming Lewisburg Area High School freshman will be reading Out of the Dust, a work of historical fiction written in free verse by Karen Hesse. The book was awarded a Newbery Medal in 1998.

In the fall, teachers at LAHS will be using Out of the Dust in their classes.
In addition to reading the book, students are required to attend at least one of the following library programs offered this summer:

Jobs in Hard Times – 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10
Retired Bucknell Economics Professor Charles Sackrey discusses the impact of the Great Depression on the economy and how it differs from today’s recession.

Life on the Prairie: A True Story – 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 30
Through photographs and family memorabilia, Pat Fry Turner shares stories about her parents who grew up on adjoining homesteads in South Dakota during the Dust Bowl era.

Dust Bowl Refugees – 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 14
Explore American history through music with LAHS  science teacher Van Wagner performing the songs of Woody Guthrie and presenting a mini-science lesson about the causes of the Dust Bowl.

    Over the summer of 2013, every incoming Lewisburg Area High School sophomore will be reading Storming the Tulips, a book in translation, originally published in the Netherlands. The book includes 24 memoirs of students who attended the 1st Montessori School in Amsterdam at the same time as Anne Frank.

    In the fall, teachers at LAHS will be using Storming the Tulips in their classes.

    Lessons from Rwanda – 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26

    Hear the stories of the survivors and perpetrators of the 1994 ethnic war and why they are important from Gerard Stropnicky, co-founder of the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble.

    Living History: World War II – 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 17

    Learn what life was like during World War II with LAHS social studies teacher Jennifer Boyer-Switala and her former student Sarah Graber.

    Alvira and the Ordnance: An American Dream Denied – 7 p.m. Thursday, August 1

    Local historians Steve and Martha Huddy tell the story of Alvira, a village in White Deer Township seized by the federal government to build a TNT manufacturing plant during World War II.
