One Book, Every Freshman
One Book, Every Freshman: Out of the Dust
a project of the Lewisburg Area High School and
The Public Library for Union County
During the summer of 2011, every incoming Lewisburg Area High School freshman was asked to read Out of the Dust, a work of historical fiction written in free verse by Karen Hesse. The book was awarded a Newbery Medal in 1998.
During the summer, the library offered a series of free* programs related to the U.S. Dust Bowl era. Students were asked to attend at least one of the programs and complete an Accelerated Reader “MindJogger” test on the book at the public library before the start of the 2011-2012 school year.
In the fall, teachers at LAHS will continue to focus on Out of the Dust.
* Except for the Read Across the Valley Family Fun Day, these Out of the Dust “One Book, Every Freshman” programs are sponsored by the Woodcock Foundation for the Appreciation of the Arts, Inc., whose mission statement reads: So long as there are little children to be introduced to the creative arts and harried adults who missed exposure to great art and literature and timeless music to be shared across all age groups, there will be a need for efforts to encourage the appreciation of the arts.
